Europol Warns of Rising Sophisticated Crypto Crimes

Catenaa, Saturday, November 08, 2025-Europol has cautioned that criminal use of cryptocurrencies and blockchain is growing increasingly sophisticated, placing heavy demands on law enforcement across Europe and beyond.

Burkhard Mühl, head of Europol’s European Financial and Economic Crime Centre, highlighted ongoing efforts to support member states in complex, cross-border investigations.

Recent takedowns coordinated by Europol included a Latvian cybercrime network laundering over $330,000 in crypto, a clandestine hawala system moving $23 million, and a $540 million crypto investment fraud affecting more than 5,000 victims.

Physical assaults on crypto holders, known as wrench attacks, have also risen, with France reporting 16 incidents this year alone.

Challenges remain in tracing illicit transactions across jurisdictions due to inconsistent standards among blockchain analytics providers.

Diana Pătruț of the Blockchain Intelligence Professionals Association said the lack of harmonized methods, wallet attribution standards, and open-source training complicates investigations.

Private sector training may reinforce commercial biases, leaving law enforcement ill-prepared to independently assess digital evidence.

Interpol and Afripol recently executed Operation Catalyst in Africa, arresting 83 individuals and targeting $260 million in illicit crypto and fiat linked to cybercrime and terrorist financing, highlighting the global scale of these threats.

Experts urge broader cooperation between public and private sectors to develop unified standards, improve investigator skills, and accurately categorize crypto-related crime alongside traditional financial offenses.

As crypto-assets, stablecoins, and tokenized assets gain mainstream adoption, Europol and partners emphasize the need for coordinated international approaches to prevent misuse and strengthen the integrity of digital finance.
