Verizon Closes $20 Billion Frontier Deal

Verizon completes Frontier acquisition

Catenaa, Wednesday, January 28, 2026-Verizon has completed its $20 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications, a move aimed at expanding its broadband footprint and strengthening customer retention as competition intensifies across US telecom markets.

The deal, first announced in September 2024, brings Frontier’s fast-growing fiber network under Verizon’s control, extending Verizon’s reach to 31 states and Washington, DC.

The acquisition is expected to help Verizon widen access to high-speed internet beyond its East Coast focused Fios network and support bundled wireless and broadband offerings.

Verizon has faced rising pressure from cable providers and smaller wireless rivals offering lower prices and bundled services. While Verizon added 61,000 Fios internet customers in the third quarter of 2025, its limited geographic availability has constrained growth.

Frontier, by contrast, added 133,000 fiber customers in the same quarter, posting more than 20% annual growth following its exit from bankruptcy in 2021.

The company also hopes the deal will help reverse recent wireless customer losses. Verizon reported a decline in postpaid phone subscribers after price increases and the removal of discounts, as more consumers consider switching carriers to manage rising monthly bills.

Regulatory approvals required a series of concessions. Verizon pledged major fiber expansion and new wireless towers in rural California and agreed to provide free internet service to qualifying low-income households for at least a decade.

Analysts say the combined company is positioned to challenge cable operators more directly by offering integrated mobile and home broadband services across a broader national footprint.
